Erie Fire Department - Erie, PA

Recruitment Process
Must have attained eighteen (18) years of age on or before the date of appointment. (Maximum age limit is 65 years old). Must be a high school graduate or have attained the equivalent thereof (G.E.D. Certificate). Need not be a resident of the City of Erie, but must be able to move within a fifteen (15) mile radius of the City of Erie; time will be allotted for the applicant to do so. Shall be in every way physically qualified to sustain the labors and exposures of the position. Must possess a current, valid Driver's License Must pass background and credit checks. A fifty dollar ($50) check or money order made payable to: "City Of Erie Civil Service Board"

The City of Erie Civil Service Board offers applications and testing for the position of fire fighter during a limited publicized period every odd-numbered year.

From this process, a list will be made of the names of all those applicants having passed the required examinations and will indicate by their order the percentage achieved from the highest down. The successful applicant must score a passing grade on the written exam. Veterans with long form DD-214, and full term of service receive 10 extra points, if they pass the written exam. If two or more candidates achieve the same ranking, a lottery shall be held. Each applicant will be notified of his or her position on the list. Agility test will be given to candidates who pass the written exam. The applicant must pass the candidate physical agility test. The candidate physical agility test will be pass or fail. The applicants will be notified of the training schedule which will begin the week of August 3rd, 2009.

As vacancies exist at the City Of Erie Bureau Of Fire, they shall be filled according to the order of eligibles on the aforementioned list. The number of names taken from the list will be dependent on the number of vacancies. These names will be nominated to the Civil Service Board for appointment only after clearing a physical, psychological and a background investigation. The list shall be effective for two (2) years. The current list ends on November 30th, 2011. Any vacancy existing prior to the exhaustion or expiration of an eligibility list must be filled from that list.

Scranton Fire Department - Scranton, PA

Recruitment Process
The City of Scranton utilizes a competitive Civil Service testing system for fire department hiring. Prospective candidates are selected from the established civil service list. The personnel department makes the contacts and arrangements for physical exams, background checks, etc. and issues conditional employment contingent upon the candidates successful completion of the certification as per contract.

New hires must attend and complete HACC Academy for fire service. Academy Certification and Fire Fighter 1 Certification must be attained during the training process. Failure to attain either during this time of training will result in dismissal of the conditional employee.

It's the policy of the City of Harrisburg to keep all applications for employment active for six (6) months. In order to keep an application active for an additional six (6) months, the applicant must renew it by contacting the Bureau of Human Resources before expiration of the initial six (6) month period. Philadelphia Fire Department - Philadelphia, PA

Recruitment Process
All firefighters hired by the PFD must apply and successfully compete in a civil service examination for firefighters. Prospective candidates are selected in rank order from the established civil service list for the processing. The process includes Department interviews, criminal and background investigations, and, if selected for conditional appointment, a candidate must successfully pass a medical examination. Additionally, all candidates must be drug free.

Selected candidates are appointed as cadets in an extensive sixteen-week academic, practical and physical training program at the Philadelphia Fire Academy. At the Academy, cadets are trained in basic firefighting procedures as well as in basic emergency medical services, for which they must obtain state certification as an emergency medical technician.

Only upon the successful completion of training are cadets sworn in as Firefighter/ EMT's and assigned to a field fire suppression engine or ladder company. As EMT's, firefighters are also assigned as needed to work in Basic Life Support Medic Units.

All appointees must successfully complete a six-month probationary period.

Recruitment Process
The Philadelphia Fire Department hires only state-certified paramedics to work in its EMS Division. Fire Service paramedics appointed to the Department must successfully complete a six-week training course in PFD protocols and procedures. Appointees who successfully complete the training process are sworn in and assigned to serve in one of the Department's Advanced Life-Support Medic Units. The Medic Units are responsible for responding to and providing service to medical emergencies in the City of Philadelphia.

The first step in the selection process is a written examination. Each candidate will receive written notification of their individual test results. Upon successful completion of all phases of the selection process, the candidate is then sent to the Fire Academy or the Police Academy. The candidate will receive pay as a Firefighter or Police Officer while attending the Academy.

The candidates that successfully pass the written examination are placed on an eligibility list that is valid for two (2) years after the Fire Civil Service Board approves the list. This is the list that will be utilized for all hiring, until the expiration of that list. The next step in the process is a physical agility test. The first few candidates are tested. Upon successfully completing the agility test, copies of the candidate’s application’s are sent to the Fire Department Administration for review.

If the candidate is selected to be hired, a contingent offer of employment is made based on successfully passing a pre-employment physical that includes a drug panel screening, psychological examination, and comprehensive background check that includes a criminal history. The candidate’s name will then go before the Civil Service Board for their approval and then to City Council for final approval. Veteran’s points are provided in accordance with the rules and regulations.
